Yummy-mummies (and daddies) in Halifax have a warm and wonderful array of companies supplying really fun, useful, natural or organic baby and kid-friendly products. Some have more of a store-front presence, and some are good old-fashioned “mom-preneurs”, working mostly from home and taking advantage of the power of the internet.

We’re so much more informed as parents today with communication the way it is. Informed perhaps, are we necessarily more enlightened than previous generations? Oddly enough, our “raised awareness” today has caused us to choose “old habits”.

Many parents nowadays are choosing parenting philosophies that our grandparents and their parents used, such as:

  • Choosing cloth diapers and clothing made of natural fabric;
  • Feeding their babies from glass bottles;
  • Playing with hand-made toys of natural materials
  • Buying their children natural (or organic) foods and products from the local Farmer’s Market and local producers (ie: soaps; sweets, preserves, etc…)
  • Wearing baby slings… well, perhaps it wasn’t so much “our” grandparents, but those from other cultures, as well as generations before and after them.
  • And more…

Try these more natural and wholesome parenting practises if you haven’t. We may delve into these and other parenting trends in the future. But for now, we’re hoping to feature a few local businesses where you can get some or all of the items mentioned above and much more.

  • Nurtured Products for Parenting: has been Halifax’s destination for high-quality, environmentally sustainable products for babies, kids and families since 2006. More than just a store, we offer workshops and build relationships. Visit us on line at nurtured.ca or in Spring’09 at our new Robie St. store. Read more…
  • On The Grow: Mini-boutique for babies and children. See our next section on “Kid-friendly Places” for more info.
  • Plovers: Yes, you know it as your local environmental stores! However, they have a lovely selection of baby or child-friendly items such as organic apparel. Visit them in the Park lane Mall or on-line at www.plovers.net
  • Valley Cloth Diapers: NS-based company focussed on cloth diapers and other baby-wares from their on-line store. Upcoming workshops offered in Wolfille, NS. (www.valleyclothdiapers.ca)
  • “Tis the Season to be Green”: a section from our CRUSISIS Holiday Guide featuring locally-made toy, child-friendly products, and locally-owned businesses. And at many of these, there’s no need to contend with a screaming-child-in-a-shopping-cart-experience since most have play areas, yielding patient participants while you shop!
    • Bib & Tucker
    • Carrefour Atlantic Emporium
    • Love Me Boutique
    • Lunenburg Toy Maker
    • Royal Diaperer
    • Uncommon Kids
    • Woozles

G-Diapers

There are 2 last thing we’d like to mention if you can’t quite make the “leap” to cloth diapers. The first is G-Diapers. They are not locally produced, but they are ingenious since they are a hybrid of cloth and disposable. Although the liner is compostable or flushable, the cloth outside and plastic piece that rests between the cloth and the liner are re-usable. They can be purchased at Planet Organic Market (Quinpool Rd) or Uncommon Kids.

G-Diapers could be a good 1st step to getting you to cloth. And… there are tips and workshops on how to use cloth diapers right here in Halifax, from Nurtured Products for Parenting or Valley Cloth Diapers mentioned above. So don’t knock it ‘till you try it!
