With the winter always being more challenging for those at risk, especially women, and a time where rates of depression soar, we thought we would feature: The Elizabeth Fry Society, provider of “a safe, healing environment for strength and re-growth.”

The Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia is an affiliate of the Canadian Elizabeth Fry Societies.  From the roots of their founding 180 years ago “dedicated to prison reform for women in conflict from the law” to this day, they “continue to fight for better conditions including education and job training programs for women in conflict with the law and those at risk”.

“The term ‘at risk of becoming in conflict with the law’, allows the Society to offer their services to women in general, not only those involved with legal issues.  Thus, the Society provides services to women (young or old) who have the potential to come into conflict with the law... as well as support to women who are experiencing physical, emotional or financial difficulties that may be the result of addictive behaviors or living in abusive situations.

The Society offers a number of workshops, resources, events and more to help women at risk.  A recent initiative of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland NS, and “long-time dream” of theirs, is Our Thyme Café in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.  Here, “women and female youth experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness, involvement in the criminal justice system and/or other issues… related to living in poverty” can receive “education and immediate employment skills…with a long-term goal of creating sustainable employment for those women.”

The Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland NS is a wonderful example of female-targeted initiatives to help break the cycle of homelessness, addiction or other barriers related to living in poverty.  They are dedicated to serve women from all walks of life, not only those in prison”.They “provide a safe, healing environment for strength and re-growth.”

Support them by helping out with time and/or money, and mark your calendar for their upcoming fundraiser: the 3rd Annual Holly House Heroes Gala event on May 15th, 2010.
