4) Winter Wisdom
Who doesn’t like the smell of home-baked bread coming from their oven? But if you’re enjoying the smell, it also means you’re taking the trouble to make it. It’s a sustainable practise if you can. However, if you’re like most people, you buy your bread. Yet what would you think about having it home-baked and delivered to you? What about home delivery of fresh and local fruit, vegetables, eggs and yogourt?...
As the resolution towards your New Year’s commitments begins perhaps to waiver a little, why not adopt a couple of practises that you can easily stick with since you don’t need to do the work?
In the heart of Halifax, we have the option of home-baked bread and/or fresh, local fruit, vegetables, eggs and yogourt delivered right to your door. If you can walk or take the bus to pick up locally made goodness from your bakery or food market, it’s ideal. But short of that, and certainly if you are contemplating driving to the supermarket to buy these same items from far away sources, consider having them delivered to you instead.

Jessica Ross is no stranger to bread-making. In fact, she travelled great lengths to learn her technique… all the way to Germany. According to Jessica, she bakes “German style Sourdough bread, which is more dense and hearty”. She takes sustainability to a whole new level with her baking since she hand delivers the bread on her bicycle to your home, in a reusable cloth bag.
And you’re in luck, she’s taking on new deliveries this winter!
So contact her now to sign up for delicious home-made bread deliveries at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . She also makes jams and pies which she’ll be happy to deliver to you as well!
How the delivery system/ membership works according to Jessica:
“The delivery system is based on the C.S.A. (community shared agriculture) model. To become a member one pays for eight weeks of home delivered bread on the first week. Starting on March 3, I bake and deliver a loaf (or two) of Sourdough bread. At the end of the eight weeks you can re-subscribe, if you would like. I also bake and deliver pies. Every Sunday I send out an email that offers different bread condiments you can order extra (like my own jams and butter I get from a farm in the valley). The bread arrives in the morning by bicycle!
Things to know about my bread:
· I use quality maritime grown organic grain.
· The bread is dark and hearty, and stays fresh for days and days.
· It is all yeast free sourdough bread, baked with whole grains.
· There is always a wheat free option.
The pricing is as follows:
· 1 loaf a week: 48$
· 2 loaves a week: 83$
· 1 loaf a week plus a pie: 128$
· 1 loaf a week plus a pie every other week: 88$
· 2 loaves of bread a week plus a pie: 158$
· 2 loaves of bread a week plus a pie every other week: 128$

Home Grown Organic Foods is no stranger to CRUSISIS. We’ve mentioned them in the past in hopes of directing you there last spring for example for locally-made cleaning supplies (before they were available in most supermarkets).
However, we mention them again because they are unlike most local food markets. They provide a home-delivery service. You can select, on-line or in their Allan St. store, what you would like delivered, whether you prefer locally-grown fare, and how often you would like to receive it.
And presto!... fresh, healthy goodness delivered to your door and a New Year’s resolution that gets kept all year long!
And make sure to drop in and visit too since they have a lot of other items for sale there like local jams; meats, fish and seafood (fresh-frozen); home-made deserts; Fair Trade organic chocolate and coffee; and more. But most of all, you can fulfil more earth-friendly commitments by picking-up natural locally-made cleaning agents and reducing your carbon footprint by re-filling your laundry detergent container from their large, dispensable detergent re-filling containers, instead of buying a new container.
