Springboard to Motion: Eco-Commuting
“Biking beats walking”. We don’t mean this in a “paper beats rock” sort of way. We simply recognize that for some of us, zooming down the road on our bike to get somewhere in a faction of the time, makes more sense then using our footpower.
Remember though, when you’re biking, most vehicle drivers are not looking out for you. So it’s up to you to look for them. This is no time to be Jimmy as the old saying goes: “Here lies the body of Jimmy MacKay. He died defending his right-of-way”. Let’s face it, vehicles are bigger, and in the spirit of “paper and rock”, truck beats bike every time.
Seriously though, learn about biking safety (below) if you are not already aware and make sure you have proper biking attire for a safe, comfortable ride.
And if you are one of those drivers, that fails to notice bikers. Heighten your awareness! Spring seems to have that coming-out-of-the-woodwork effect on bikers. So remember to yield them their right-of-way.
- Halifax Cycling Coalition (www.halifaxcycling.ca)
The Halifax Cycling Coalition has a tremendous amount of relevant information for bikers to keep you safe and rolling along, including:- Bike Safety
- Halifax Bike Routes

- Bike Trailers
If you have young children, a great way to keep them safe and rolling along your path with you is with a bike trailer. If you are without, find one on Kijiji® Halifax. Canadian-owned cooperative retailer MEC also has a great bike trailer, convertible to a jogger, for young families. Make sure to get a proper marking flag to increase yours and your child’s visibility when pulling the trailer.
