Green Spring Clean
It’s impossible to talk about spring cleaning without stating one of our favorite old quotes about recycling that you’ll hear us say from time to time: “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure”. It reminds us that our spring cleaning, purge or triage process has the added bonus of potentially recycling our wares to someone who fancies them.
Whether you sell re-useable items or give them to someone in need of them as we’ve suggested below, you’re doing a good deed if you ensure they don’t end up in a landfill before their time is due. This way, the lifecycle for which they were “intentionally made” (there’s that word again!) is being respected.
- Give re-useable items to needy groups (below)
- Give items with Freecycle or by curbside using Halifax’s famed “pre” curb-side pick-up. (These night-time poachers are among our city’s best recyclers!)
- Exchange goods through the NS Materials Exchange (www.nsmaterials.com)
- Sell them by hosting a yard sale or selling them on Kijiji® Halifax
Community Groups That Recycle (or accept household & clothing donations):
- Big Brothers, Big Sisters
- Salvation Army
- St. Vincent de Paul
- Download a list of Halifax charities or groups taking donations from HRM’s website at: www.halifax.ca/wrms/documents/Community.pdf
Most organizations have collection centers or bins. Some such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters can pick-up from you. Call them to determine their nearest location to you and the easiest way to recycle your “treasures”.
