2) In Season .. for Spring!
Already? Yes, you heard properly! Find out what spring crops have already arrived...
We enjoyed freshly grown tomatoes and spinach a couple weeks ago. It was wonderful to get locally grown fresh foods so early thanks to some Valley green houses.
According to Maria Simpson of The Vegetorium Country Farm Market, there are a number of things just coming available FRESH from the valley right NOW. The Vegetorium has:
- Beet Greens from Ron Muis in Steamill
- English Cucumbers from Stokdijk Farm in Truro
- Mushrooms from Valley Mushroom Company in Waterville
- Spinach from Bob and Cheryl Ansems in Steamill
- Tomatoes (regular & cherry) from Den Haan Farm in Middleton.
And they are all PESTICIDE-FREE!!
Organically grown field/forest fiddle heads are available as well, Maria tells us, “picked by a retired police officer who lives in Fall River, but who won’t disclose his ‘secret’ growing spot".
We were pleased to have the opportunity to speak with the folks at The Vegetorium about the new spring crops already available. Like many other “farm market stores”, they are a wonderful extension of farmers’ markets if you are unable to attend on the weekend, or if you are looking for locally farmed foods through the week.
The Vegetorium Country Farm Market offers a lot more than just fresh, locally farmed foods in their store. They also carry Speerville Flour Mill products (from NB); locally made honey, preserves and baked goods (24 Carrot Bakery); nuts; Just Us! coffee and chocolate products; and more. Drop in to the Vegetorium if you are driving out the Waverly Road (2900 Highway 2, Fall River, 860-2131), or looking for a weekday market alternative in the Dartmouth/ Fall River area. Or visit your nearest market or farm market store.
