SustainaBlog
Greetings! Welcome to "SustainaBlog"!
SustainaBlog is our way to stay in touch with you & help you stay in touch with sustainable living. Enjoy…
Recently I attended the 1st annual Atlantic Eco-Expo in Halifax, Nova Scotia in Nov. 2009...
It was our 1st also… 1st trade show exhibit that is, for CRUSISIS Sustainable Living. There were inspiring speakers such as Peter Corbyn, Founder of One Million Acts of Green and Richard Zurawski, Meteorolgist and local climate expert, as well as thought-provoking main stage attractions like an eco-fashion show.
And of course, there were a number of eco-friendly businesses and organizations exhibiting. Some, like our upcoming Holiday Seasonal Draw Sponsor, P’lovers the Environmental Store, were ‘founders’ of sustainable retail in the greater Halifax area. And others were the new-kids-on-the-block, like Bullfrog, now offering 100% clean energy to Martimers.
Hopefully you got a chance to attendance. If not, book your calendar for next year…
Because I was at the CRUSISIS booth most of the time (except when my wonderful volunteer Camila helped out. Thank you!), I didn’t have an opportunity to take in much of the Eco-Expo myself unfortunately. But I did get a chance to see one main stage attraction you need to hear about...
The notable main stage attraction is the eco-cooking show. And no, I'm trying to get you to try tofu... well not yet anyway. The eco-cooking show was hosted by Halifax local and organic restaurant The Wooden Monkey’s owner, Lil MacPherson, and her Chef assistant (talented young lady whose name I missed - sorry). They made The Monkey fish cakes and nori salad, which they served. They were healthy and delicious, and made with “real food”!
That’s the key here… using real, good, healthy, wholesome food. It is one of the keys to living sustainably. It not only supports our local economy, but it also reduces our carbon footprint in the process. Lil talked in detail as well about the amazing “healing property of foods”… “real foods”. She mentioned ingredients like “miso” and “nori” (or seeweed), and using brown rice and flour instead of the less nutritious and ‘bleached’ white varieties. And she mentioned another ‘key ingredient’ (a soy sauce substitute I believe, the name for which I can not recall and will ask her for and post later). It’s an “alkalizer”, and Lil shared that when it is used, it can actually settle your stomach almost instantly since it helps to neutralize the acids we put in our bodies.
It was a pleasure to hear Lil share her knowledge of good food and their natural healing properties. But my favorite part was her story about Big Life Foods owner John Dalton, whom she credits with teaching her a lot about nutritious cooking. She mentioned he uses many healthy ingredients and that she wanted to learn about each one and why each was used. She recalled a story about how he was mixing in a whole grain ingredient into a recipe (millet I believe she said).
She asked him what that would add to the dish. He replied: “Nothing.” Lil perplexed, then asked: “Then why are you putting it in?” He answered: “Because they need it. The public NEEDS it.”
On that note Haligonians, we give you “SustainaBlog”, because you “NEED" it. We ALL need it. The PLANET needs it. The COMMUNITY needs it. We are CRUSISIS, the ‘CRUSade for the crISIS of People, Planet and Community’. It's what we are, and it's what we do. And we humbly offer you our “SustainaBlog”.
Thoughtfully,
Sylvie
