Change. It's in your hands.
Complex global issues like food security, climate change and pollution touch virtually every person, every profession, everywhere. Solutions require passion, commitment and real knowledge.
Dalhousie is helping you find those solutions. Our Environment, Sustainability and Society (ESS) program, a Canadian first, is more than an academic offering. It's a whole new way of thinking.
History, theatre, management, community design, sociology, the sciences - anything that you have a passion for can be paired with ESS.
The interdisciplinary nature of the ESS program allows you to learn from faculty and other students' perspectives while sharing core courses focused on environment, sustainability and society. Explore program options with the faculties of:
- Architecture and Planning
- Arts and Social Sciences
- Computer Science
- Management
- Science
- King's School of Journalism
Future undergraduate degree combinations may be available with the faculties of Engineering and Health Professions. Earn a double major or combined honours degree by blending courses in ESS with a second focus from the faculties mentioned above.
Through Dalhousie's existing Interdisciplinary PhD program, students are able to frame their own research projects in the areas of environment, sustainability and society. Master's and PhD-level programs and classes in the ESS program are also under development. Students will draw upon resources and faculty from across the university, and cluster with other graduate students in order to study the environment from different angles. Check out a list of current graduate programs (PDF) with courses related to environment, sustainability and society at Dalhousie.
Learn with professors from across campus as they debate real-world problems. Immerse yourself in hands-on work that matters -- in the community or boardroom, alongside citizens, NGOs and others. Follow your passion. Change the world while you're at it.
