>> Excerpt from Spring Guide 2009 - from Healthy Food & Everyday Gourmet for Spring <<

“You are what you eat”, right? But sometimes time doesn’t allow for us to always make the right food choices, for ourselves, our planet and our community. And if you don’t know where to find some fo the vendors of healthy, locally-produced food, that makes it all the more challenging.

Here is some food for thought about where to go to get these delicious, local products:

1. Go to the Farmer’s Market!

Whether it’s the Halifax Farmer’s Market (www.halifaxfarmersmarket.com) near Bishop’s Landing, the Dartmouth Farmer’s Market at Alderney Landing (www.alderneylanding.com/market), or another market near you, visit it!

NS has such an exceptional community of farmers, many of whom are up bright and early to bring you their freshly-picked products. You don’t have to grow anything! They’ve done the work for you.

Worried about parking? No need. Take the bus. Or ferry from Dartmouth to Halifax to take in both markets! And while you’re there, pick-up some food for the Feed NS, or other needy organizations, to complete your holistic market experience!

2. Unable to Get to the Market – Where Else to Get Farmed Food?

Lucky for us, there are many options if you can’t make it to a Farmer’s Market. Or seek out locally-grown products from your favorite grocery store. Or drop into one of the many other locations that sell locally farmed products:

  1. Home Grown Organic Foods - Allan St. (www.hgof.ns.ca)
  2. Local Source Market - Charles St. (www.localsourcemarket.ca)
  3. Planet Organic - Quinpool Rd. (www.planetorganic.ca)
  4. Farmer stands such as Dave’s Fruit & Vegetable (Main St., Dartmouth) and Farmer Clem’s (Halifax, Bedford, Sackville)
  5. Or visit Select Nova Scotia’s website (www.selectnovascotia.ca) for ideas.
