Let's Talk Turkey - Misconceptions
During our Holiday Guide, we featured some local and Canadian heroes in our ‘Tis the Season to Reflect & Resolve Ourselves, in the Give to Community section. Matt Hill and Stephanie Tate were far away inspirations, from BC, Canada, running 1 marathon per day to raise money and awareness for environmental initiatives. And Kristin Roe, living in Halifax, was our local choice, for swimming 40km to raise money and awareness for AIDS and Farmers Helping Farmers.
We’re hoping to make Everyday HeroesTM a standard section in our guides to promote wonderful work being done, as well as the causes for which they do it. And also, we hope to inspire others to follow their great examples.
Since it’s about community, we’d especially love your hero suggestions, near and far!
We don’t have a local hero this time, not because there aren’t any, but just because we ran out of time unfortunately. We did however, stumble across someone worthy of being our far-away hero. Her name is Eunice Kennedy Shriver. She took a small step and made an enormous difference. That’s what our Everyday HeroTM section is about: taking a step and making a difference.
Sports Illustrated has created a new award: The Sportsman of the Year Award. It went to Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Here’s why and excerpts of what they had to say:
“On a steamy July morning in 1968, Eunice Kennedy Schriver stepped up to the microphone at Soldiers Field in Chicago and convened the 1st Special Olympics Games.”
She stood in a stadium that holds 85,000 people. But a crowd of fewer than 100 people who came out to watch. There were approx. 1000 athletes from 26 states and Canada. But she predicted that some day there would 1 million athletes.
She was wrong.
Today, there are 3 million Special Olympic athletes training all year-round, in all 50 states and in 181 countries. Outstanding!
A small step was taken 40 years ago by someone with a wonderful idea. What a difference she has made.
What will your difference be?
